Forklift is a powered truck used to lift, transport, stack and arrange materials. In the industry, it is widely used to lift goods. As a powered industrial machine, there are risks in operating it. Here are few safety rules when operating forklift.

Workplace Forklift Safety Rules

1. Operated by Licensed Operator

Only trained or licensed operators can operate forklift safely. Employers are to certify that operators attended training and provide refresher training at least once in every three years. Occasionally, employer need to evaluate operator’s performance and decide if the operator is competent to operate forklift. 

2. Forklift operates uniquely

Driving a forklift is different than driving a car. Forklifts are operated differently than a car when steering or turning. Rear wheel steering is used as front wheel carry the load. Lastly, never leave the forklift unattended when operating it.

3. Carry out daily inspection

Perform daily inspection prior to operate the forklift. Do inspection to identify and report on any problems or defect. Inspect on the brakes, light, horn, and steering wheels. In addition to that, check for water, oil, or radiator leaks.

4. Check load stability

Operate the vehicle according to the manufacturer’s instruction. Do not exceed the maximum rated load. Secure and balance the load to prevent forklift from tipping over. To operate safely, you need to ensure the forklift is stable and balanced.

5. Aware of blind spot

Pay attention to your workplace surroundings. Ensure to make eye contact with pedestrians and other workers. It is important to have plant and people interaction. Keep the fork low to the ground. In addition, always look in the direction you are travelling. Travel reversely if the load blocks your view. 

6. Refuel and recharge the forklift

Refueling and recharging forklift is a hazardous activity. Thus, only licensed operator can refuel and recharge forklift. Ensure to refuel forklift in a well-ventilated area. To manage hazards related to job, view our guidelines on Job Safety Analysis here.

7. Park the forklift

Make sure to park the forklift in the designated parking areas. Ensure that the forklift is not blocking any pedestrian walk or any entrances/exits. Keep the fork on the ground, apply parking brake, switch off engine and remove the forklift key.
