Effective safety and health committee should involve employees from different departments. Under OSHA 1994, if there are more than 40 employees in a company, safety and health committee need to be established. One of the purposes is to respond and discuss on safety and health related concerns by their co-workers. As they assist the employer, they need to attend safety related training to gain awareness and knowledge. Through the training, they will understand on their roles. What are The Roles of Safety and Health Committee?
In a Safety and Health Committee, the appointment of management and workers representative are according to Occupational Safety and Health (Safety and Health Committee) Regulations 1996. Once they have been appointed, these are their roles.
- Review safety and health procedures at the workplace
- Inspect workplace
- Investigate any accidents or other related matters that are raised
- Investigate safety and health related complaints
1. Review safety and health procedures at the workplace.
Safety and Health Committee will assist in reviewing and developing safety and health standards, rules, and procedures at the workplace. They will assist in educating fellow colleagues about risks and safe procedures related to work. Besides, they will review effectiveness of Safety and Health programs in the workplace.
2. Inspect workplace.
Besides, Safety and Health Committee need to regularly scheduled inspection at the workplace. They need to inspect the workplace at least once in every three months. 3. Investigate any accidents or other related matters that are raised
When there is any accident, near-miss accident, dangerous occurrence, occupational poisoning occupational disease at the workplace, SHC will participate in accident investigation. 4. Investigate safety and health related complaints
Upon receiving any unsafe act or unhealthy practices complaints, the committee need to investigate. They will prepare investigation report and propose corrective actions to be taken.
As management and employees are together, it is the best platform to discuss on any safety and health related issues. This include observation during workplace inspection, safe working procedures, safety reports, safety and health policy, and effectiveness of safety and health program.
Establishing an effective safety and health committee might be time consuming, but occasionally it helps in preventing injuries or accidents in the workplace.
